- A week ago I bought a german version of the internal USR Sportster Data & Fax
- Modem (in Germany). There are some peculiar things about it, the most sur-
- prising: No Eprom, but a big Chip that has "Intel Flash" and a couple of
- numbers printed on it. The manual (from 1994) seems to be completely out of
- date (i.e. talks about a USR HST) and the picture on the box shows a board
- layout with Eprom but no FlashRom.
-
- The people at the company that I bought the modem from (aparently authorised
- USR dealers) were surprised as well but concluded I could upgrade it like a
- Courier. They didn't have a clue if an update (to v34+) was available and
- where I could get it from.
-
- My questions:
-
- What kind of modem do I have? Maybe the hardware of a USR Sportster Vi with
- DSVDbut with a Firmware that doesn't support the additional features? (ATI7
- says something like USR Sportster (german version), I don't have it here at
- the moment).
-
- How can I check if the flash rom is accessable, without running into danger
- to overwrite the firmware and making it unusable?
-
- Would it then be possible to download the firmware (to have a backup) and
- try and upgrade it to a Vi or V34+ (american/international version)?
-
- Maybe I should leave it as it is, but I am kind of curious.
-
- Thank you for your comments
